"A Wooden Iowa Rifling Bench"

Copyrighted in the USA, 2004

This 2nd  Edition has been Revised & Expanded and is the method used in American Pioneer's new DVD!

Crikey!  Al 'n me couldn't believe how this little book took off!  Yet there were typos on a couple of pages that didn't make us feel proud.  So, enough was enough.  We corrected some issues and added some really aggressive rifling techniques and additional photos to come out with a 2nd edition.  So boys, here it is.  It still ain't big, an' it still ain't fancy, but it's still th' best dern book on hand rifling that you're gonna find on planet Earth!  Yeah, there's a couple of other books out there being sold on this subject, but this is th' only book that takes you through th' whole rifling process as I do it, and I've done it literally dozens of times.  This book ain't theory.  It doesn't cover methods that you can only read about.  This book gives you the whole shootin' match as we do it here at Toad Hall.  No bull sh-t.  No hype.  No maybes.  No ifs, ands, or butts.  My names' on the book so it's flat out GUARANTEED  or your money back.

58 minutes for a half-stock barrel is my personal record!   Can you best that?

If you have questions, I have answers.

So, you got a hankerin' to build a rifling bench and then operate it?  Interested in finding out more about rifling the old way on a wooden machine an' without electricity?  Wanna help keep one of the "arts & mysteries" of traditional American gunsmithing from dying out?  This book will help you out.  "A Wooden Iowa Rifling Bench" is 3 books in 1, plus it has been expanded to include more aggressive rifling techniques.  Thus reducing time spent.  I've rifled a barrel for a half-stock in less than an hour!!   Look inside and you'll first find out how to make a lathe long enough to turn a long rifling worm blank, if you don't already have one.  Then, we're gonna show you how to build your own rifling bench around that worm.  The grand finale is how to operate your new rifling bench and also trouble shoot it.   Cover to cover is 58 pages and well over 150 photos.

YOU can build this for about 50 bucks, even for less, with common hand tools and a lathe.  If you only want to rifle short barrels, you don't even have to build a long lathe! You can customize it to fit your own particular needs by changing the dimensions, grooves, or rate of twist to suit.  This pattern is highly adaptable.  What's not covered is other methods of rifling, other styles of benches, or gain twist.  What you do get is knowledge of how we rifle barrels here at Toad Hall Rifleshop.  If we can do it, you can, too.

'Sides me 'n Hoot Al, the Track of the Wolf,  Dixie Gun Works, Pieh Tool Co., and the Log Cabin Shop also carry this book for your convenience.  So what in the Sam Hill are you waitin' on?

A CD version of this edition will not be made available.

Beware of possible counterfeit copies of this little book, complete with forged autographs and spurious serial numbers!   They're sold out West on the internet.

1st Edition Rifling Book Errata Sheet

Please print this following sheet for your own use.

23 Jan 2006

Regardless, no matter how hard you try, some things still manage to fall through the cracks. It was thought that Al and I had all the bugs out of our book, "A Wooden Iowa Rifling Bench", as it must have been proof-read a jillion times, but Mike Ebner out to the Pine Ridge 7 Ranch still discovered a couple of those pesky critters! A tip of the hat to him for helping us out. If these errors have caused you any grief, I sincerely apologize.

In short, the stringer mounting holes in the handle are mis-spaced and do not line up correctly with the stringer holes at the opposite end.

1. Page 24 under TAIL STOCK GUIDE, Para. 1: "Cut a piece of 2X6 board" should read: "Cut a piece of 2X8 board...".  Also, please change the final dimension of 5-//16" listed in this paragraph to 6".  Para. 3: Hole dimension is listed as 1-15/16" and should read 1-5/8".

2. Page 26, Para.. 3 & Figure 57: Please change the 3-5/8" dimension to: 4-3/4".

Please note that all 1st edition books purchased after the 23 Jan 06 date will have these amendments included and any other updates that may be required .  Cheers,  Bookie
