Day of Pentecost
Welcome
An ancient Hebrew harvest festival that came to be associated with the giving of God's law at Mount Sinai, Pentecost became for Christians the occasion for the gift of the Holy Spirit to the church. The Spirit is the power of the resurrected Jesus in our midst, claiming us in baptism, feeding us at communion, and sending us into the world to be bearers of that divine word that can raise the dead to new life.

St. John’s is making plans, anticipating the outdoor worship Wednesday, June 20, 7:00 p.m. This year the worship features Frankie Valens, a pop star in the 60’s and 70’s. Frankie and his wife Phyllis, an accomplished concert pianist, traveled full time in their gospel music ministry for seven years before coming off the road in 1997. Their ministry is totally a faith ministry. Please spread the word, bring your lawn chairs or blankets and join in this exciting worship experience. (If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we will be in the sanctuary.) There will be a Love Offering received for the Valens’ ministry.
Joyce Carlson will represent St. John’s at the Southeastern Iowa Synodical Women’s Organization Gathering in Cedar Rapids June 15th & 16th. Amanda Walter also plans to attend the Gathering, and possibly Carol Wilcox.
Each woman attending is asked to bring at least one AIDS/ Hospice Health Kit. Three of each of the following are still needed to complete 3 kits: 1 tube tooth paste, medium or large (or two small sample sizes) - any kind; 1 "pick" comb (see illustration); 6 Band-Aids; 1 pair heavy duty household gloves (kitchen type) size: medium. If you would care to donate any of the items, please bring them to the church office. Thank you.
Everyone is invited to Lutheran Day at the Iowa Cubs on Sunday, June 24th, sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Tickets are only $2. ALL proceeds from ticket sales will go to Kids Against Hunger, which uses volunteer groups to package food and prepare it for distribution to areas of the world where people are starving. The baseball game starts at 1:05 and pre-game activities begin at 10:00. Pre-game festivities include donuts and coffee for early birds, worship, kids’ activities, free musical performance by Stan Dahl and Tropical Steel, free baseball caps and a free picnic of hot dogs and soda. For tickets, contact the church office.
The confirmation class thanks you for supporting the bake sale/car wash/lunch on May 12. With your help, the class is $317 closer to its goal for confirmation camp costs!
The Confirmation kids also earned nearly $1,200 with the cookie dough sales. The Men in Mission donated $15 per camper; the St. John’s Women of the ELCA donated $20 per camper. The goal is gradually being reached!
The high school Sunday School class thanks everyone who donated or shopped at our garage sale. Thanks to you we were able to raise about $250 to help Hope Ministries!! They are very excited about the help they will be receiving. There are still a few things left from the sale in the last room on the south end of the education wing; if you would like something, help yourself and leave your donation in the church office or get it to Carol Truckenmiller.
Memorial Day emerged from the shadows of the Civil War. It was first observed in the South. Before the close of the war, a group of women decorated the graves of those who had died in that war. A few years later, in 1868, May 30th was set aside as a day for placing flowers on the graves of soldiers throughout the United States.
Soon Memorial Day was observed each year across the country. In the years since World War II it has become a day when many Christians remember those who have gone before us in the faith.
The past few years Memorial Day has been made into a big holiday weekend instead of a day of respect and tribute to the departed. This year, let us stop long enough to bow our heads and pay respect to our departed loved ones and especially those who fell in battle on distant shores while helping preserve the liberties of America.
Stop long enough to say “Thank you, Father.”
