Second Sunday after Pentecost

Welcome

From all appearances the young man from Nain was dead. The funeral procession moves along until Jesus stops it with a word—"Do not weep"—and a touch. Another word, "I say to you, rise!" and the dead man is restored to life; another touch and he is restored to his community. Jesus' powerful word and healing touch are for us, too, for God has looked favorably on we who are God's people.

St. John’s is making plans, anticipating the outdoor worship Wednesday, June 20, 7:00 p.m.  This year the worship features Frankie Valens, a pop star in the 60’s and 70’s.  Frankie and his wife Phyllis, an accomplished concert pianist, traveled full time in their gospel music ministry for seven years before coming off the road in 1997.  Their ministry is totally a faith ministry.  Please spread the word, bring your lawn chairs or blankets and join in this exciting worship experience.  (If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we will be in the sanctuary.)  There will be a Love Offering received for the Valens’ ministry.

The Ladies of the Luther Christian Church CWF wish to invite you to their CWF Guest Day, Wednesday, June 27, 1:00 p.m. at the Luther Christian Church, Luther.  You will be entertained by the Singing Sisters.  Please plan to stay and enjoy a salad lunch following the program.  Please Phone Ann Harris by June 20, 515-795-3546 to RSVP.  (Invitation is on the events bulletin board.)

Everyone is invited to Lutheran Day at the Iowa Cubs on Sunday, June 24th, sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.  Tickets are only $2.  ALL proceeds from ticket sales will go to Kids Against Hunger, which uses volunteer groups to package food and prepare it for distribution to areas of the world where people are starving.  The baseball game starts at 1:05 and pre-game activities begin at 10:00.  Pre-game festivities include donuts and coffee for early birds, worship, kids’ activities, free musical performance by Stan Dahl and Tropical Steel, free baseball caps and a free picnic of hot dogs and soda.  For tickets, contact the church office.

Many of you heard the news of the sudden storms which swept up the eastern edge of the state last Friday.  Especially hard hit were the communities of Fruitland, Grandview, and Muscatine.  None of our ELCA church buildings seem to have been damaged, but several members from these congregations were affected by the tornado.

Pastor Michael Stadie of Lutheran Disaster Response reports that the preliminary assessment is that 67 homes were completely destroyed (no longer habitable), and 53 more received major damage.  He continues to consult with local leaders to assess the situation and advise concerning immediate needs, as well as begin the process of forming long term recovery strategies.

The personal home of Pastor Greg Friedrich, Administrator of the Lutheran Homes and his wife Pastor Gloria Friedrich was uninhabitable.  Their car was also picked up by the force of the storm and landed near the house. Gloria was home at the time and was injured by a wall which fell on her.  They are now moving into a home on the campus of the Lutheran Homes, as she continues to nurse a broken collar bone along with scrapes and bruises.

Please include the victims of this and other disasters in your prayers.  If congregations or individuals wish to also respond with financial resources, the synod will be administering a fund in cooperation with Lutheran Disaster Response.  Chaplain Friedrich reports that a number of employees whose homes were hit were either uninsured or underinsured, and there are no doubt others in the community who will also struggle to recover.  Monies designated for the "Muscatine Area Tornado" will be used to administer long term responses to situations such as these through LDR. These donations can be made through the regular remittance process to the Synod Office. Gifts can also be made through the elca.org/disaster website or www.LDR.org.
