Second Sunday of Easter

Welcome

These first weeks of Easter focus our attention on appearances of the risen Lord. It is not always easy to see Jesus after his resurrection. The gospel will remind us that Jesus has a new body in which he now lives: As we gather this day to greet each other and share the peace of the Lord, may our eyes be opened to discern that we are looking at the risen body of Christ!

Riverside Bible Camp is having its Annual Spring Work Day Saturday, April 21.  Work Day begins at 9:00 a.m.  Tools and lunch are provided.  Please call the camp office at 800-372-7748 or 515-733-5271 if you plan to lend your services and if you plan to stay for lunch.

The Wartburg Choir will present a concert Saturday, April 28, 7:30 p.m., St. John’s Lutheran Church, 600 6th Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa.  For nearly three-quarters of a century, the internationally-acclaimed Warburg Choir has continued to develop a reputation for a cappella choral excellence.  The ensemble has received critical international acclaim for its versatility, performing some of the most challenging pieces ever written for choral ensembles.  Check the events bulletin boards for more information.

At St. John’s Annual Meeting in January, the congregation endorsed the Council decision to not continue subscribing to the Lutheran Magazine on the every member plan.  Members are now receiving a notice from the publisher asking if they wish to continue to subscribe at their own expense.  St. John’s will receive a few copies that will be available to borrow.

ACCESS, Assault Care Center Extending Shelter & Support, is looking for volunteers to make a difference in the lives of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.  Direct service volunteers typically work one four hour shift per week.  Training is scheduled for May 12, 13, 19 and 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All four days are required.  More information is available on the events bulletin board in the Educational Wing.

Luther College is preparing for an exciting summer for student musicians, dancers and artists at the 2007 Dorian Summer Camps.  Becoming more popular each year is the organ workshop for senior high students.  Check the information and take one of the brochures that are on the events bulletin board in the Educational Wing.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

During her youth, Caroline was raised in an abusive household. Her mother was an alcoholic who verbally assaulted her on a daily basis. Her father was a drug addict and would come home and beat his wife as Caroline watched – and would occasionally leave Caroline her own bruises. As she grew older she found herself becoming engaged in relationships with men that held these same characteristics. During one of her relationships, Caroline found herself pregnant. -  Imagine the environment Caroline’s child will be raised in.

This situation occurs every day throughout our nation and our communities. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to recognize the impact abuse can have on the life of a child. Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) offers many educational and treatment programs to overcome the emotional and behavioral effects of abuse. Our residential centers provide a safe environment for children of abuse to grow spiritually and learn to succeed in life. LSI’s Healthy Opportunities to Experience Success (HOPES) program is a family education and intervention program that helps prevent the cycle of abuse from ever beginning. HOPES assists parents in at-risk situations to develop knowledge critical to strengthening parenting skills and helping their children thrive.  Your support of LSI ensures that we are able to continue to battle child abuse and help children and families throughout the state.

To find out more about LSI’s programs for children and families of abuse, call 1.888.4LSIOWA or visit www.lsiowa.org.
