Welcome

The procession with palms brings us into Holy Week and the celebration of the mystery of our salvation. We enter the week by hearing the story of Jesus' passion -- his suffering and death. In baptism we have been fused to this story; in Holy Week we make our way through it again, because it brings us to life with Christ.

The Wartburg Choir will present a concert Saturday, April 28, 7:30 p.m., St. John’s Lutheran Church, 600 6th Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa.  For nearly three-quarters of a century, the internationally-acclaimed Warburg Choir has continued to develop a reputation for a cappella choral excellence.  The ensemble has received critical international acclaim for its versatility, performing some of the most challenging pieces ever written for choral ensembles.  Check the events bulletin boards for more information.

Jan McDermott, assistant director at Riverside Bible Camp, will be speaking to the Women of St. John’s at the Wednesday, April 4 WELCA meeting.  Jan is known as a very dynamic speaker and will be making her presentation on “The Potter and the Clay”.  Riverside is a very integral part of our Christian education for children and for families who participate in their camp experiences.

Women of the ELCA are encouraged to participate in this very special meeting.  The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m., with Jan McDermott speaking about 7 p.m. Business Meeting and refreshments will follow the program.

Cluster One Spring Gathering is Saturday, April 14 at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley.  Registration and coffee begin at 9:00 a.m.; $5.00 registration includes lunch.  The program will be with Pastor Walter Msangi and his wife Christine.  Pastor Msangi leads the Shighatini parish in the North Pare Mountains of Tanzania.  Check the flyer on the events bulletin board in the educational wing.

St. John’s Women of the ELCA will be hosting a Ladies Spring Tea Sunday, April 22nd at 2:00 p.m. in the church basement.  Carla Werre will be presenting the program “Celebrations in Faith”.  Special music will also be part of this relaxing afternoon.  Take a break from your busy schedules to join us for this uplifting event.  We hope to see all of you ladies there.

At St. John’s Annual Meeting in January, the congregation endorsed the Council decision to not continue subscribing to the Lutheran Magazine on the every member plan.  Members are now receiving a notice from the publisher asking if they wish to continue to subscribe at their own expense.  St. John’s will receive a few copies that will be on the ushers’ table or in the library when it is established.  If you do not wish to subscribe, those copies will be available to borrow.
