Salem City Hall

Salem City Hall is located in the Community Building at 201 South Main in Salem Iowa. Also at this location are the Salem Volunteer Fire Department, Salem First Responders and Salem Congregate Meals.

After deciding that the old Salem Gym would not be restored, it was decided that a new community building be built for the town as a needed asset. In December of 1985, the old fire station burned down. Plans were modified to include a new fire stateion and city office to the community building. At the same time, more space was needed for the Congregate meal site. A grant was applied for and received. Boundries for the fire district were determined and all members receiving fire protection were contacted for donations. Matching funds were collected. The Community Center serves many functions. City Meals, City Council meetings, and other community meetings are held in this building.
The property on which the community building now stands was owned by Tonch and Faye Heartsill. They purchased the property from Maude Collatt in 1981. Mr. Heartsill released ownership of the property in exchange for the Masonic Lodge Property, east of the present Community Center.
