Health Policy:

Kids' Business of DeWitt, Inc. is licensed to provide care for healthy children.  There are no available facilities or medical staff to care for sick children.  Therefore, sick children will not be allowed to stay at the center.  If a child becomes ill during the day, a parent or guardian will be contacted.  The child must be picked up within one hour from notification.  This policy is enforced to ensure that our children and staff are exposed as little as possible to infectious diseases.  We ask that you have alternate arrangements available if your child is requested to leave the center due to illness.

We will ask you to pick up your child or request that you keep your child at home if he/she exhibits any of the following symptoms:

· Fever- Infant under four months old- 99.0 degrees or more taken under the arm.

· Fever- Over four months old- 100.0 degrees or more taken under the arm.

· Vomiting- more than once in a 24-hour period.

· Severe coughing, wheezing or difficulty breathing- child gets red or blue in the face or        makes high pitched whooping sound and coughing.

· Eye discharge- thick mucous or pus draining from the eye.

· Diarrhea, when (1) child seems sick and has loose stools, (2) stool is so runny or so large in        volume that it does not stay in the child’s diaper, (3) older children who cannot reliably get        their stool in the toilet.

· Body rash with fever.

· Sore throat with fever and swollen glands or mouth sores with drooling.

· Head lice- from the end of the day until after the first treatment.

· If the child is irritable, continuously crying, unusually tired and or unable to participate        comfortably in center activities.

When your child has been sent home due to fever, vomiting, or diarrhea, we ask that your child remain at home until 24 hours after the above symptoms have ceased.

Medication:

If a physician prescribes an antibiotic (for anything other than otitis media), we ask that you keep your child at home for 24 hours before returning to the center.  This time period and medication will help to keep all of our children healthy.  A child may only return to the center when he/she is fever free.

We realize that there will be times when your child will have to take medication during the day.  We ask that you complete a “Prescription Medication Authorization” each time that a series of medication must be administered.  Please give this completed form to your child’s teacher.  With your child’s health and safety in mind, we will only administer dated, labeled, and prescribed medication or original labeled “over the counter” medications.  Each form must have specific administration information such as time of day, amount and how dosage should be given.  “As needed” is not something that can be determined by our teachers.  All medication policies are subject to state regulation.

Medication Procedure for Parents:

Parents must check all medicine (including diaper ointments, Ambesol, etc.) in their child’s classroom, and complete and sign an “Authorization to Administer Medication” form, providing specific instruction regarding dose and times medication is to be given.

Each teacher will administer medication and record dosage, time and initial according to parent’s written instruction.

Medication used over an extended period of time (greater than 30 days) will need to have a new medication authorization completed every 30 days.

All medication must be clearly labeled with the child’s name.

Medications should not be stored in diaper/book bags.

Allergies
are very common among young children.  Please inform us of any allergies your child may have so we can take the appropriate precautions to protect your child’s health.

Discipline Procedure:

At Kids' Business of DeWitt, Inc. we understand that positive discipline teaches and encourages healthy development of a child’s self-esteem.  We use positive guidance techniques such as modeling and encouraging accepted behavior, redirection and setting clear limits.  “Time-out’ is used when necessary with one minute per year of age with a maximum time away from regular activities.  Children feel comfortable and confident knowing that their teacher’s expectations match their developing capabilities.

Discharge Policy is used in the event it is determined that your child is not yet ready for the group experience or if his/her needs are not best met in the group setting.  We may ask for a confidential conference with you to discuss possible options.  We do not believe a child should remain at the center unless he/she derives some benefit from the program.
