The Thorn Story

Are You Going To Heaven or Hell?

Two of my largest passions are growing flowers and daily awareness of my Christianity. I discovered that many of the current flowers grown today originally had Christian names, which I think adds a different quality to their enjoyment and meditation capabilities. Please click the links on the left side of this page to view flowers and plants that originally had a Christian name, and maybe get creative and design your own little prayer flower garden!

I believe everyone needs a special place of their own to get away from stress and problems, and get closer to God. My special place is my back yard that has over 2000 square feet of flowerbeds.

copyrighted image magnolia flowerThis website has been a long labor of love, I do hope you enjoy looking and learning about flowers and plants that originally had a Christian name or a Christian association.

I ventured out and created 2 more websites after this one, that were a little bit successful, but I started having a lot of health issues, so I stayed away from the internet for quite awhile.

Well, the health issues are still with me, but I'm back on the internet in full force now. My personal flower garden pictures that used to be here are now on a new website, along with many new flower garden pictures, and lots of garden, gardening, flower, spiritual, and motivational quotes.

I now have a web page just for flower seeds, with many more gorgeous flower pictures, a blog with a flower slide show, and pages on Tulips, Crocus, and Daffodils, and even Aero Gardens.

What you will find on this website is a compilation of 130 flowers that have a Christian name. There are actually over 600 plants and flowers that either have a Christian name or a religious association. I’ve chosen these 130 because they are fairly easy to grow, readily available, and reflect on God, Jesus, the Saints, and people in the Bible. So many plants are named after “Mary”, “Virgin”, “Lady”, or “Our Lady”. I’m not shunning the mother of our Savior, as I did include a few plants with names referring to Mary, but I wanted a more “rounded” compilation of plants.

I hope you agree, and truly enjoy showing off your “Christian Flower Garden” to neighbors, friends, and family.

You could design a small niche in a sunny room, on your deck or patio, in a corner of your flower garden, or spread them throughout your flower beds.  You might like to purchase a plant for a friend to start their collection. If you're going to use these flowers as a Christian tool, you must make or get name tags for the plants! Really now, what is the sense of designing a flower garden with Christian named plants and flowers, to help instill relaxation and reflection without being able to view the Christian name of the plant? There's much more meaning to everyone that could view your flower garden if they could see the Christian name, without having to ask you 'what's that'?

copyrighted image sunshineMy sincere desire is to put Gods Word in front of the unknowing public, and to delight a Christian gardener with a new avenue to display their faith in God. There are many possibilities to use flowers as a 'vehicle' or 'witness' or tool to help you touch someone’s life. Something as simple as planting a Job’s Tears in your flower garden with a name tag can be used as a conversation starter when a visitor to your flower garden asks about the name, you can explain the Book Of Job to them!

You will no doubt receive comments on these plants like “I didn’t know there was a Christian name for it”.  You can reply, if you've purchased the flower by it's botanical name, that every plant in this listing has been fully researched, and the sources are:

Alfred Dowling's Plants of the Sacred Nativity

Judith Smith's The Mary Calendar

Marzell's Deutsches Worterbuch der Pflanzennamen

Rolland's Flore Populaire

Bailey's Hortus Second

Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture

Graf's Exotica 3

Moldenke's Plants of the Bible.

The above sources were available after "De Plantis A Divis Sanctisve Nomen Habentibus" by Johannis Bauhin, Basil, 1591. It documented the Marian and other religious names of plants with source quotes from botanical books in Latin, Gallic, German etc. - giving testimony that these names were widely found in medieval oral traditions as the then common names of these plants. You’ll find that some of these plants own two names, in that case I believe you should be able to make your choice of which one you would like to use.

This listing is very specific. If you desire the correct Christian named flower, you must purchase it by it’s botanical name. For example, say you see that there are poppies, and you decide that you do not want to use the corresponding link included to purchase the poppies, you’ll just go to your nursery and purchase some poppies and call them by the Christian name I’ve listed. The fact is….you don’t have the correct poppy genus that has the Christian name, so you really shouldn’t call it by a Christian name.

Every plant in this compilation has a link to purchase that plant genus. Quite a few of the plants could only be found available from one source. If you think that you may find the plant less expensive elsewhere, good for you!, but please use the plants’ botanical name to purchase it.

At the time of this compilation, (1-30-05), all of the corresponding links for each plant was current. I have tried to include by either stating where I found the plant, or by showing you the complete link; a way to search for the plant in case the supplier changes their website. I’m sorry, but I cannot be held responsible for a plant supplier either discontinuing the product or changing their links. If you do find a broken link, just write down the correct botanical name of the desired plant, and do like I did........search the internet.

I’ve grouped the flowers with my zone in mind, Iowa, (zone 5). Please consider which zone you are in, because what I would consider a container flower in my zone may be a perennial in your zone. As a very general rule of thumb, if you live in zones 1-6, you can still choose any flower that is listed here, you’ll just have to care for it differently than those living in warmer climates.
