Evangelism Committee’s “Touch of Christmas Love,” will reach out to needy families in Delaware County again this holiday season.  They will be placing the tree with tags in the entryway of the church on Sat., Nov. 28th. Pam’s phone number is 563-608-0941 if you have any questions.  The phone number on the cover of the Lamplighter is incorrect.  If anyone would like to adopt an entire family, Pam would be happy to get a family list for them.

 

Silent Auction:  Heaven Bound will again be having their Silent Auction.  The auction will be ongoing until December 13th.

 

Prayer Concerns:  We pray for the family and friends of the soldiers of Ft. Daily Texts for 2010:  the office will again order this daily devotional for anyone interested.  The deadline for ordering is Nov. 23.

 

Children’s Christmas Program will be Dec. 12-13 at 5:30pm and 10:30am respectively.  Special music for the prelude is welcome.  If you would like to sing, play the piano, or any other instrument, contact Laura Clute at 927-3405.  High Schoolers can join in too.  You don’t have to perform at both services, but it would be nice if you could.  Thank you!

 

The December 6th Congregational Meeting will be held in the Fellowship Hall at 9:15am to vote on the Multi-media proposal and the adoption of a resolution recommended by the Bishop of the  Northeastern Iowa Synod.   Please plan to attend.

Living Liturgy Event: November 19-21, 2009, Trinity Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, MN.  The Living Liturgy team – Marty Haugen, Susan Briehl, Ben Steward, Tom Witt, and Mary Preus – brings a wealth of experience from years of planning and leading worship, teaching and leading workshops for clergy, parish musicians, and other worship leaders.  The office has registration materials if interested.

 

Senior Pastor Update:  After a careful review of multiple pastoral resumes and prayerful discernment, our Call Committee deliberated and has submitted Pr. Rabary’s name to be our Senior Pastor. He is at the last phase of his rostering process and will be available for call after the Synod Candidacy Committee approves him on December 4, 2009.

Borrowing Tables: There are lots of tables in the hallway around the corner from the sewing room so please do not take any of the tables in the sewing room. They have tables marked for cutting patterns and use the sewing room for extra seating for big funerals.  So if anyone needs a table or chair or anything, please call or email the office.  If it is a last minute thing, leave a note thru the slot in my door.  The main thing is to know who took what.  Thank you, Linda Stoner

Men’s Fraternity:  Winning at Work and Home   this is a 16-session study, and focuses on the two areas that are central to a man's life: Career and Family.  It will begin to build the walls of manhood through study dealing with a man's chief responsibilities.  Sessions include a 50-minute DVD lecture followed by small group discussion.   Join us on Friday mornings from 6:00 – 7:30 a.m. in the First Lutheran Fellowship Hall beginning on Nov. 6th.  Sign-up is located in the narthex, or call Linda at the Church Office.  Deadline for sign-up is October 27th.  There is no cost for this session.  For information: http://www.mensfraternity.com/curriculum/winning

Pink Prayer Cards:  When filling out a prayer card, please put on your name as the requester.  This way if the office has any questions, they can contact you for more information such as correct spelling, pronunciation, length of time name should be kept on the list, etc.

Flood Repair in Cedar Rapids will continue for years.  The need for volunteers is huge.  We will be going again on Saturday the 20the of June.  Men and women over the age of 14 are invited.  For more information or questions, contact Bob Hostert at 920-6365.

 

 

Second Helpings/Kid’s Café:  A couple of years ago the MUMC started the program Second Helpings.  It is held every Monday evening at 5:30pm.  It was created to provide a meal for those who are in need.  On average it serves 125-150 people each Monday night.  Just recently “Appetizers” was added to this great program.  From 5:00-5:30 the appetizer half hour offers children the opportunity to have a fun social time and learn about the Lord.  A new mission will begin this summer to provide lunch and learning for our area youth:  Kid’s Café will offer a free lunch and activity each Tuesday and Thursday noon hour.  If you would like to share a monetary donation to either of these local community program, please make your check out to Second Helpings-Monday Night and/or Kid’s Café and mail it to Manchester United Methodist Church, 413 East Butler Street, Manchester.

 

Lutheran Services in Iowa is beginning a group program that will meet every Monday starting on Monday July 6, 2009 from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the LSI offices. The group meetings will be called Munch out on Monday’s  MOOM is part of our Early Intervention (EI) program, which is geared towards maintaining the family, and strengthening each family member through empowerment, skill building, and effective communication.  MOOM is open to all children ages 8-17.   A snack will be served at each group session.  Call 563-927-3281 to register your child for MOOM at LSI.  Gary Schmidt

Calling All Campers: It’s time to start thinking about summer and going to camp!  On behalf of the Bill Johnson Memorial Fund, First Lutheran will pay $250.00 per child for the first 15 campers who apply. To apply, call the Church office (927-3420) or email firstlu@iowatelecom.net. Registrations postmarked on or before March 2nd saves $25.00. High School Seniors: EPIC grants and Cuthbertson Memorial Scholarships are available to you if you are planning to attend college after graduation.  EPIC grants of up to $150.00 per semester are available if you are planning to attend an ELCA Lutheran College in Iowa.  There is no application for an EPIC.  You just need to notify the church office that you are attending a Lutheran College.  The Cuthbertson Memorial Scholarships number and value will be determined by the funds available.  These scholarships will be offered to members of First Lutheran Church who wish to further their education at any technical school or two or four-year college.  Preference will be given to graduating high school seniors; however, those already enrolled in college or intending to go back to further their education will also be given consideration.  Obtain an application for the Cuthbertson from the Church office and apply before March 1.

 

Prayer Shawl Ministry:  It is still not too late to help if you are interested in knitting or crocheting prayer shawls. We would appreciate donations toward the purchase of yarn.  It costs approximately $15.00 per shawl.
