Bill's mother's family originally came from Saxony to America around 1753.  The patriarch that arrived here was Johannes (John).  He settled in Sussex County, New Jersey near the borrder with Pennsylvania and New York.  When the American Revolutionary War broke out the family was divided with some of the family remaining loyal to the British Crown and some choosing the side of the patriots.  However, when the war ended the Loyalist or Tories, as they were called by the Americans, were no longer welcome and suffered many hardships.  To compensate them for their loyalty, Britain offered them free land in Canada.  Several of John's son took up the offer and moved with their wives to Canada, settling near Niagara.  Later, around 1800, Jacob, one of John's sons, and his wife Catherine moved on to to become one of the early settlers of the Long Point (Norfolk County) area on the north shore of Lake Erie.  Life was hard but the land was rich in resources of timber and good soil and these early settlers did well over time.
     By the time Jacob & Catherine's grandchildren became adults some 50 or 60 years later, available land was scarce and the timber had largely been harvested.  The children of one of Jacob's son, John, began to look south to the United States from whence their grandfather had fled.  This expanding nation to the south was offering jobs and cheap land.  So these adult children crossed the border, a very easy task in those days, and took up residence near the Mississippi River in northeast Iowa.  They seemed to have come to the new land in three waves.  By 1856 they had all arrived in Iowa with the last group bringing old John and his wife, Grace.  In a matter of a decade John would be resting in Iowa soil and in less than another decade Grace would be lying beside him.
     Robert, one of the sons, would hear stories, probably from one of his cousins, of new land being opened up in Kansas.  By the 1880s he made his move further west with his family of a wife, Elizabeth (Betty), and two children, Frank and Sarah Addie.  There the living was difficult on this land with no trees, prairie grasses as high as a man's head and where the buffalo had recently roamed in great herds.  Plagued by hot dry winds in the summer, grasshopper that ate the crops down into the ground and frozen in the winter by cold unrelenting north winds he raised his family and would find his final resting place.  But he would not pass on until he suffered the loss of his daughter, Addie, from consumption.
      Frank married a girl from Missouri and begin to raise a family there.  After the death of his two parents and the loss of his two sons, Frank would move to southern, Kansas.  He worked at various jobs that had to do with growing plants and gardens.  They settled in a small southern Kansas town, Cedarvale.  Eventually one of their daughters, Mable, would graduate from high school and become a school teacher in nearby Elgin where she met and married a tall dark man, Elmer Rathbun, whose family was also "pioneer stock."  To them was born one child, William.
   There you have it.  Seven generations from Saxony to southern Kansas and now Bill is back to Iowa.
