About Popups
If you've been online for any period of time, you are probably well aquainted with popups. This technology is an advertising tool used by many companies. When visiting a website, often times another window will "pop up" over the top of your browser window. This popup window usually contains an advertisement. The site you were trying to get to is being sponsored in some way (paid advertising space, pay-per-visit, or donations) by the company featured in the popup ad.
While this can be an effective advertising tool, most Internet users consider popups to be annoying. In fact, most Internet users look for ways to rid themselves of popups. There are several ways Internet users can avoid popups.
One way is to use a web browser with integrated popup blocking. Web browsers like Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape Navigator and Opera have optional built in popup blocking. Installing and using one of these browsers will make popups all but non-existent in your web browsing experience. Links to these browsers can be found by clicking one of these links:
Another useful tool can be the Google Toolbar. This tool installs alongside Microsoft Internet Explorer and puts popup blocking capabilities into the default web browser that comes with Microsoft Windows. You can find that tool by clicking on this link:
